One of my seminary profs pointed out that even academic study should be “spiritual reading” and that seminaries exist to train leaders for congregations (“That’s why I’m here and not teaching in a Department of Religion” was his quote, I think).
Abp. Akinola’s address is a strong affirmation of the seminary as a “fountain” (sorry, how can I help myself?) of life for the church . Too much of the lib prot seminary direction is about the ego needs of the student – to set him/her up as one who is over/against congregations as an outside “expert” rather than a vessel of the living water to keep them filled.
[blockquote] We end up with what looks like Church but in reality is not. [/blockquote] This is the bitter pill. The Western world has gone apostate, and we have replied with an ersatz church. Our Jeremiahs need to speak not only to the world but to those who think they are actually in the church but in reality are not.
