The Tennessean Profiles the Presiding Bishop on a recent Visit

When it comes to controversial issues, like homosexuality, Jefferts Schori says she begins with studying the Scriptures.

That includes looking at the messy human families found in the Bible.

“In the Old Testament, there are lots of examples of what holy and blessed marriage looks like, and what unholy marriage looks like,” she said, “including polygamy and concubines being normal.”

In the New Testament, she said, Jesus never married and was celibate. Paul wasn’t married either.

“He said don’t get married ”” unless you have to ”” because Jesus was coming back soon,” she said.

Like a lawyer looking for loop holes?

Seriously though, what is the level of Ms Schori’s Scriptural/theological competency?

Has she written books or published papers on the issues where she is asserting her leadership in matters of Scripture/theology?

Isn’t her major area of competency marine biology?

I think you should notice her saying polygamy and concubines “were normal”. The concubine of Gene Robinson (or is he the concubine?) and that of countless same-sex partnered Episcopal clergy and laymen are precisely the normal situation now. She will certainly turn her interesting ideas about the Bible into a way of excusing this norm. Daughters of the King chapters to be replaced by Daughters of Lot. Why not?
