According to informants quoted in The Catholic Herald, the Queen has “grown increasingly sympathetic” to the Catholic Church over the years while being “appalled”, along with the Prince of Wales, at developments in the Church of England.
The usually well-informed newspaper adds that the Queen, who is the Supreme Governor of the C of E, is “also said to have an affinity with the Holy Father, who is of her generation”.
In July, The Sunday Telegraph disclosed that the Queen had told the heads of a traditionalist group, formed in response to the liberal direction of some parts of the Anglican Communion, that she “understood their concerns” about the future of the 80 million-strong global church.
Anybody got a link to that? I don’t see one in the T19 archives.
Greetings.
I believe this is what you are looking for.

And she has not only a perfect right to be appalled, she has reason to be, as well. Why the C of E so deeply desires to commit institutional suicide I cannot imagine. It’s not a difficult thing to be successful as an ecclesiastical institution. The current leadership of TEC and CoE don’t seem to know how to do it.
It’s not much of a story. Any normal person would be appalled.
Surprising though, is the suggestion that Prince Charles is appalled too.
Hang on a moment, there is no reputable source cited for these attributed comments, and they are not in keeping with how The Queen normally expresses Herself, so I think maybe a degree of wishful thinking on someone’s part is at work here…
Prince Charles is very involved in the Prayer Book Society type of lobby – the culture of traditional liturgical language, which is completely eschewed by Conservative Evangelicals. I don’t see either The Queen or Prince Charles as likely to have much truck with your average Conservative Evangelical non-liturgical Praise Service, which tends to be the norm in their “traditional” parishes, and certainly doesn’t have anything to do with the C of E’s tradition at all.
#7, J I Packer would be surprised to hear you say that conservative Evangelicals “eschew” the language of the Prayer Book… He’s a member of the Prayer Book Society.
He may well, farstrider, but hardly any Conservative Evangelical churches in England use the BCP – para-liturgical praise services is very much where they’re at.
