Last week I tabled a question in parliament asking the government about the measures it is taking to tackle prostitution.
The Policing and Crime Bill is making its way through the House of Lords and it is important that everyone, regardless of political allegiance or background, unites to ensure the bill is passed so we can send a strong message that funding sex slavery, and the systematic abuse of women, is not acceptable in this country. That is why I feel the time is right to speak out.
A worthy statement from His Grace of York…but I must confess when I first read the headline I thought we were still talking about the episcopate in the C of E!
#1 LOL.
A real problem is that London does attract wealthy individuals from all over the world who expect to buy whatever they want in addition to the domestic market, and we have people who have come over from failed states in the East who are used to lawlessness and the rule of violence and the gun. This has meant that trafficking for prostitution has become a vicious problem, in London as in the major cities in Europe. I think that even with the ABY’s law change that enforcement will be the challenge. But by exposing the clients to prosecution it could make an impact if the police have the time and the resources to devote to it and might make them think twice.
It’s a shame that Australasian countries and states do not have such a women’s champion among its own clerics.
Art, maybe without establishment there is not much they can do directly. But you may be right; I haven’t heard much championing of these issues from Eastern pulpits. Or perhaps it’s just that the voices are faint at this distance.
An interesting take; and not one I’d immediately considered; so thanks.
For all that, we have had in both some Aussie States and New Zealand a few strident voices – the RCs were most vocal in NZ a few years back when new legislation was passed fully legalizing the ‘sex industry’. Yet sadly mostly simply “faint†… Which for countries that have championed many a form of feminism is most curious, I fancy!
