“I can’t say it surprises me,” said the Rt. Rev. Mark Lawrence, bishop of the South Carolina diocese, which has begun withdrawing from some of the national church’s councils to protest the policies on gays. He said the split in the church is likely to endure:
“Is there anything that can be done to bridge it? No one has come up with it yet.”
If there is no bridge and no intention to build one, there is a de facto split which needs to be acknowledged and dealt with by something more than half measures.
I’m inclined to hold as not fully faithful the idea that, just because one does not presently see how to bridge it, a way to bridge it will not be found. I hope we keep trying.
“…between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.”
Luke 16:26
