The US government has authorised the capture or killing of radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, currently based in Yemen, officials have confirmed.
The cleric, who is a US citizen, is being targeted for his involvement in planning attacks on the US.
Mr Awlaki was linked to the attempted bombing of an airliner bound for the US and a shooting on a US Army base.
Isn’t this Shredding The Constitution?
What happened to the right to a fair trial?
Or is this a tacit admission that the (sotto voce) War on Terror is still on?
Don’t tell Bush or the Dar ul-Islam!
#1 I agree. What is different in this from the recent assassination in the Emirates by a team of alleged Mossad assassins using the forged passports of real British and other nationals? That led to the deportation of an official of the Israeli Consulate in London for alleged identity theft and a frost between our governments.
We have also had CIA rendition flights using British airports taking people to third world countries because things could be done to them there which would not be permitted in the US or UK.
This sort of thing just loses the US the moral high ground internationally and the battle for hearts and minds. When will it ever learn?
Right. If we are in a war that is one thing, but if this is law enforcement they should get the Courts to issue an injunction and if that doesn’t work the Marshal service should arrest him.
I’m not suprised to hear he’s been moved to the al-Qaeda target list in Yemen. Also, the US has been working with the Yemen military and government for a while now.

Wait a minute….
I believe that Dick Chaney is no longer writng policy.
C’mon MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC, AP, NPR, and on and on and on…..where’s the outcry against the current regime? I can’t hear you….
Excuse me, why is this public knowledge? This is the sort of thing the CIA is designed and supposed to handle, just like they did with Allende in Chile. If we are not going to let the CIA do its job, why have it?
