Covenant is obviously a very key central biblical concept. Our intent is however specific and limited for our gathering.
My intention is to try digging into the deep core pulse of the covenant reality in the God-Israel relationship and its working out or otherwise of its vocational existence.
While the paper’s focus is not on the challenges and crisis of the Anglican Communion, it is inevitable some reflections and comments would be made to it, with particular reference to the vocation of the Global South as our evolved existence since 1994 has defined it, and now in its fellowship with the wider orthodox family in the Communion….
This teaching is so extremely powerful!
We all recognize the Messianic nature of Isaiah and the connection Jesus makes when he reads from the scroll in the synagogue and says, “Today in your hearing this saying is fulfilled.”
But here the whole internal working of Isaiah’s prophecy is fully explained! In Deuteronomy the role of Israel to be a “light to the nations” is made very clear. They are not given the Land for their own sakes but in order to show the world the meaning of God’s Covenantal Love and faithfulness. Through their own faithlessness, Israel became a kind of “darkness” instead of light. And so, it is the Messiah Himself Who restores the Light to them — in and of and by His own Self — so that they may again become Light to the world. And — the Gentiles themselves not only receive that Light, but are made able to become Light as well.
How rich Archbp Chew’s explication is.
True Covenant is that which makes people into the very Light of Christ showing the world the Truth and Goodness of God.
Anything less is a betrayal of our identity and mission.
