    If he’s in as a Captain (O-3) it’s highly likely he had previous service in the Army, and the officer corps at that. That would make both his decision and that of the ING much more understandable.

    A local friend of mine, who retired as a Major (O-4), re-activated and went to Iraq two years ago at the age of 58. He speaks very good Arabic, and having grown up in Teheran also speaks fluent Parsi — a fact not revealed to the assorted Iranian activists he interviewed (in Arabic) in eastern Iraq.

    He said the whole year away from home was worth seeing the expressions on the faces of captured Iranians — who had been talking freely amongst themselves — when in asked them in fluent Parsi why they had been lying to him in Arabic.

    When old goats have something specific to offer, our military is happy to waive normal age requirements if the guy isn’t a bloated walrus. Thanks to all of ’em.
