(London Times) Mass suicide fears as French worry that it’s Apocalypse, now

So many people in France believe that the world is about to end that a government agency yesterday alerted the country to the risk of mass suicides by converts to prophesies of imminent Armageddon.

Natural disasters, the internet and French fears of economic doom are conspiring to lend credence to predictions that the planet will self-destruct on December 21, 2012, said Miviludes the government body that monitors cults and suspicious spiritual activities.

There have been 183 false predictions of the end of the world since the Roman Empire collapsed and these are multiplying with new technology and a global climate of fear, it added.

only 183? How many accurate predictions of doomsday have there been in the same time period? I don’t know why we should focus on those predictions that were incorrect.

My first attempted comment was removed by the moderator, so let me try again, with a little different tack. “The end” is now, and always will be, a popular subject for “prophets.” That is because (a) there is a lot of money to be made, and (b) many of us ‘wish for” the end, so we could (inevitably, we think) be one of the survivors, and then say to the rest of the world, “see, I told you it was going to happen, and you didn’t listen; now suffer.” That is human nature showing through, and it isn’t very pretty. We ought to be praying for “one more day,” every day, so that we could be going about our job of converting the world to Christ, one person at a time. Sadly, we will continue to watch for the end.
