A young boy was chosen, brought forward to the alter, then blindfolded. He then picked one of three pieces of paper from a jar. The paper was shown to the congregation. On it was the name of Bishop Tawadros, who will be the new Coptic pope. The congregation broke into spontaneous applause.
It might seem a strange way to choose a new leader for Egypt’s eight to ten million Coptic Christians – and many more worldwide.
Yet Copts believe this is the way the hand of God was revealed. That is the view of Youssef Sidhom, editor of the Coptic Watani newspaper:
I’m told that a memorial plaque commemorates a visit by Pope Shenouda III to a men’s room at Nashotah House, and that some seminarians refer to it as the Papal Throne. I gather he was a good friend of the House. I hope that his successor can maintain such congenial ties with orthodox Anglicanism.
I’ve been to a Coptic Orthodox worship service, and found it quite beautiful, and impressive. The liturgy book is in Coptic (which uses a font that looks a lot like Greek), Arabic, and English, so it was relatively easy to follow along. It was long, but the time passed quickly. I’ve never been around so much incense.
