Diocese of SC Trial Day 11-TEC Spends Day Making Arguments Judge Rules Irrelevant

For the second day in a row, the witness admitted that he had not been shown any documents on contributions by the Diocese to TEC for the same period that TEC was claiming it had made contributions to the Diocese and its parishes.

The rest of the day was spent reading the deposition of Thomas M. Rickenbaker from Spartanburg, South Carolina, who was interviewed for Bishop of South Carolina but did not make it to the second round of finalists. Rickenbaker was not present for his testimony.

Rickenbaker, who was baptized by Tom Tisdale, Sr., father of TECSC’s lead attorney, said that when he was interviewed for the job of bishop that the first question he was asked in his interview was “Can you lead us out of TEC?” Richkenbaker had never provided that information to anyone in five years and then only recalled the conversation after being contacted by a representative of TECSC. His statements are in dispute by those who interviewed Mr. Rickenbaker in 2006.

Read it all.

Interesting that the following sentence is in the info.

Rickenbaker, who was baptized by Tom Tisdale, Sr., father of TECSC’s lead attorney, said that when he was interviewed for the job of bishop that the first question he was asked in his interview was “Can you lead us out of TEC?”

So what that Rickenbacker was baptized Thomas Tisdale, Sr??? Also if Rickenbacker is still a priest why not use the appropriate title for a priest? Also, so what if Rickenbacker had been asked the question back in 2006? Perhaps that would be relevant to the case had the diocese elected Steve Wood back then and he had lead us out in 2008 or 2009? But we elected Mark Lawrence who tried very hard to keep the diocese in TEC even wanting negotiation with TEC up until the end (Oct 2012) when +Lawrence’s efforts were thwarted by the actions of TEC’s Presiding Bishop (after a decision by the DBB).

  2. Sarah says:

Yup — and actually that question was asked of the candidates formally, as I recall, and the Diocese made its choice by selecting the man *most emphatic* about wanting to keep the diocese in TEC.

No . . . the leaders at the national level allowed their anger and bile to cause them to make a stupid over-reach by attempting to depose “the troubler of Israel” and get the annoying Bishop Lawrence out of an organization they wished to run without public resistance . . . and now here we are.

  3. Sarah says:

I always said that were I advising the national church from a public relations and branding strategy perspective, the very best thing they could do is to ignore the Diocese of SC and its bishop, pausing only occasionally — perhaps every couple of years — to chuckle and figuratively pat the diocese on the head as “one of ours, and so extreme — but we’re an inclusive church and allow all sorts of oddballs in our church.”

But they simply could not summon the patience — and emotional restraint — to do that.

  4. Luke says:

    1. Actually, proper form does NOT include the use of “Sr.” with a man’s name.
His name is Thomas Tisdale; his son’s name, at least until he perhaps chooses differently after his father’s death, is Thomas Tisdale, Jr.

My mother used to go ape when she was listed or described as “Mrs. – – – Sr.”

It can be said of the wife of the father, that she is the “Senior Mrs. – —. ,but not correct to call her “Mrs. –___ Sr.”

  5. tired says:

“…the first question he was asked…”

Even if this were true, I’m not sure what legal argument this testimony is intended to support. Premeditation? Conspiracy? Poor interviewing skills?

I wonder if his elimination from the selection process still stings? Helpful background:

“…Thomas M. Rickenbaker from Spartanburg, South Carolina, who was interviewed for Bishop of South Carolina but did not make it to the second round of finalists…”

  6. silverfox says:

Mr. Rickenbaker was not even a nominee in the DOSC election for Bishop. The election was held in August and the nominations had been open for over a month. There were no nominees, other than Mark Lawrence, not even from the floor of the electing convention held in August 4, 2007. The search committee was not involved in this election.

    The new one’s up.

I can imagine Runyan asking the fake bishop for TEo about the Dennis Canon and the “vonRosenburg” knowing that canon inside and out, up one side and down the other, extremely glad to bring his great knowledge and expertise to the judge. I can imagine then, after great accolades were paid to his Dennis Canon knowledge, his horror when asked about the Canon that prevents him from using a secular court to rule on anything church. Then him getting amnesia on the stand and not knowing much about that particular canon.

I can hear the judges thoughts. “He wants those being attacked by the National Church to follow the Dennis Canon while he, himself, completely disregards a Canon that would demand itself followed via his supposed Christian lifestyle.”

    ….next.

Silverfox, There were two elections for the XIVth bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina. I gather what Mr. Rickenbacker is testifyng to is when he was questioned as a nominee in the first election.

In fact, the diocese later called another witness, one of the clergy on the search committee, The Rev. Gregory Kronz, rector at St. Luke’s on Hilton Head Island. He “testified today that he was head of the search committee to find a bishop to replace Bishop Salmon.”

Kronz said that he and another member of the committee, Paul Fuener, interviewed the Rev. Thomas Rickenbaker, one of about a dozen candidates that had made it to the interview stage. Henrietta Golding asked Rev. Kronz if he ever inquired as to whether or not Rev. Rickenbaker would be willing to take the diocese away from the national church, or if there were any indirect questions in that regard. Rev. Kronz said, “no.” Asked if Rickenbaker had removed his name from the search list, and Kronz again said, “no.”

Both quotes are from the diocesan website.

You are correct- there was only one nominee in the second election. Had the lay and clergy delegates of the diocese really wanted to leave, they could have elected Steve Wood their bishop but they did not. As Sarah rightly points out, they elected the man who wanted to keep the diocese in TEC.

Just remember it was the action’s of TEC’s PB voiding the results of the first election which made the second election necessary.

#4, The name should be The Rev. Thomas Tisdale as the man was a priest in the diocese. The suffix, Sr., can be used to avoid confusion between father and son. Well….. at least the Post family thinks so. I still have my mom’s Emily Post etiquette book somewhere. I found it interesting that Emily Post’s greatest concern and one reason she wrote her book was that people should be courteous and respectful to each other- a very old-fashioned notion these days. We who actually care about etiquette are a dying breed….. sigh….

    Milton,
You should read the blog, Locusts and Wild Honey, for an observer’s point of view of the day’s proceedings. I won’t spoil all the fun but I will say that one of the more interesting comments from Father James Gibson is that some people confirmed by Bishop Lawrence asked to be re-confirmed by Bishop von Roseneberg.

Our parish has its annual visit in the fall and we had confirmation only a week or two after Bishop Lawrence has been “restricted”. There was great angst among the TECcies in the parish about him coming and one even refused to call him “Bishop”. One was so mad at him that she could not contain her anger at him and it showed when she asked questions at the parish forum when he came.

  11. Milton Finch says:

Thank you, Lady, so much for the Locust and Wild Honey site. I was looking for that very site yesterday evening and could not remember the name. THANK YOU!!!!!
