Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey is receiving training at All Saints Episcopal Church in Hoboken toward obtaining his master’s degree in theology.
McGreevey — who famously resigned as governor in 2004, saying that he was “a gay American” — is at All Saints for half-a-day once a week and on Sunday morning.
He’s not preaching to the congregation — yet, but, “He’s getting his field education at All Saints,” confirmed Rev. Geoff Curtiss, director of All Saints Episcopal parish. “He’s basically learning about how the parish works and learning what it means to run a Sunday morning congregation.”
I like the title “director of All Saints Parish” . . . clearly a journalist heard “the rector” on the phone and had no idea what that meant.
Also, interesting to visit their Web site http://www.allsaintshoboken.com/ and see rainbows prominently used as a design element. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell whether this is a sign of their desire to be open and affirming, or that their Web site has not been redesigned since the late 1990s. 🙂
And TEC leaders or General Seminary leaders, I forget which, were SO quick to proclaim he was not training for the ministry. And progressives jumped all over us for being skeptical.
We were right. Is it too snarky to say “We told you so.”
has McGreevey ever apologized for his actions as Governor? They went far beyond sexuality, it was really an abuse of power towards a subordinate, also permitting a foreign citizen access to national security matters.
Karen Karen Karen . . . [heavy sigh] . . . you are so untrusting, so suspicious, so closed minded.
Just because Father McGreevey is “getting his field education,” and “learning about how the parish works” and learning about “what it means to run a Sunday morning congregation” doesn’t mean he’s training for the ministry.
He could be training for any number of things — Nascar, for instance, or medicine.
I really wish that we would stop trafficking in rumors and hearsay and innuendo and would only deal in facts, and just accepting what our overlords tell us, once and for all.
Where are the elves when they are needed?
He isn’t the first entitlement ridden soul to make an end run around the process, and he won’t be the last. He just happens to be notorious.
If past performance is any indication of future performance, I think McGreevey is perfect for TEC.
Moses, the murderer of an Egyptian; David, the murderer of Bathsheba’s husband; Paul, the serial persecutor of murdered Christians—but we shouldn’t build the faith through the efforts of gay priests?
That depends, ember. Did Moses, David and Paul extoll the virtues of murder, persecution and adultery?
I gotta go with ember on this one. McGreevey is perfectly in tune with the Episcopal Church and a worthy addition to the TEC clergy. For TEC to be entirely consistent, McGreevey absolutely has to be ordained. And with his vast executive experience as the corrupt governor of the corrupt state of New Jersey (where I was born and raised and have thankfully escaped from) it is only right that he be consecrated a diocesan as soon as possible and quickly thereafter named successor to the current PB. No tut-tutting here, please. McGreevey is every bit as qualified as she who is PB, plus he has the patina of his singular especial qualification so exulted as sacred in TEC.
I seem to recall he was involved in a rather nasty divorce. Too bad the article didn’t let us know how that was resolved.
With his background, clearly destined for the purple.

NO, ember – don’t be disingenuous. The people Jesus uses to build HIS Church and Kingdom are *REPENTANT *AND* RE-BORN * FORMER* murderers, slave-ship captains, harlots, tax collectors, etc. The Lord said, ‘Go and sin no more…lest something worse happen to you.’
Nowhere does an unrepentant person get around the Cross. Galatians 5:24
