Episcopal Bishop who took in Alberto Cutié unafraid of making waves

But when Cutié’s new bishop, the Rt. Rev. Leo Frade, stood inside Miami’s Trinity Cathedral to announce the news to dozens of international reporters, he created his own waves.

The ”Inquisition is over,” Frade said in widely broadcast remarks after Catholic Archbishop John C. Favalora admonished him for a disrespectful “public display.”

The style is typical of Frade’s nine-year tenure, say those who know him well: casual, off-the-cuff and, to some, a bit too in-your-face.

Any little respect I had for Leo Frade is gone after his silly and bigoted remarks. Stay classy, “Bishop”..

I wish one could say the same of the heresy.

    Under the mercy,

    And I missed it!

How terribly, terribly sad. What a broken church.

  5. A Senior Priest says:

My parish and a parish in another diocese had a joint long-running medical mission project in Honduras but after Mr Frade took over we decided to shift it to another country because of his constant -and insistent- demands for favors.

Ha! That’s EXACTLY what they want you to think! NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition. l0l

What a typically buffoonish comment. Ah well . . .

  8. Paula Loughlin says:

The poor man has been misinformed. The Inquisition is not over. Just what does he think is the mission of the CDF? I do believe that Cardinal Levada is pretty dang handy with the sofa cushions.

  9. Christopher Johnson says:

I never underestimate the power of the spiritual tradition into which I was baptized to embarrass and humiliate me. Utterly classless.

Unfortunately, it often seems that anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable prejudice left. But Catholic-bashing isn’t the way to draw in Hispanics, as the deluded bishop seems to think.

The Diocese of Central Florida has a long-standing companion relationship with the Diocese of Honduras, and thus Bishop John Howe has dealt with +Frade for many years. Now that they’re neighbors in Florida, I wonder how they get along. I wish +Howe would call him and give him a friendly rebuke and some earnest admonitions to shape up and act like a real bishop, but I doubt Frade would listen. After all, everyone knows the man’s not afraid of “making waves” within TEC itself.

One interesting thing I learned from this article, Frade was raised Methodist and went to evangelical Asbury College. Too bad he’s drifted so far from his moorings and has experienced a spiritual shipwreck.
