Gay marriage is not going away as a highly emotional, contested issue. Proposition 8, the California ballot measure that bans same-sex marriage, has seen to that, as it winds its way through the federal courts.
But perhaps the public has reached a turning point.
A CNN poll this month found that a narrow majority of Americans supported same-sex marriage ”” the first poll to find majority support. Other poll results did not go that far, but still, on average, showed that support for gay marriage had risen to 45 percent or more (with the rest either opposed or undecided).
The parish I serve lost about seven core families some years ago over the gay issue. They founded a ACNA congregation to uphold “traditional Anglican teachings.” Ironically, many of them had been divorced and remarried. When challenged on this, their leader responded, “Oh, everybody accepts divorce now.” I won’t be surprised if we see the same disturbing inconsistency with same-sex marriage.
Would I be remiss in asking among whom this poll was taken? I don’t recall anyone asking ME for my opinion.
I’m always fascinated by the triumphalism that proponents of same sex marriage always seem to want to proclaim. I don’t think its as clear cut as that. It could be, but it might just as well not be.
What’s this worth? See the entry three above this one. Are we surprised that the elite are telling a radically different storhy than the rest of the US? Larry
