ENS–House of Bishops to consider immigration, evangelism during fall gathering in Phoenix

Issues of immigration and evangelism will top the agenda as more than 100 bishops of the Episcopal Church gather Sept. 16-21 in Phoenix for their annual fall meeting, themed “Changing Contexts for God’s Mission: What is the New Invitation?”

The bishops also are expected to discuss congregational development and mission, all within a context of prayer, Bible study and worship.

At least 50 bishops and a dozen of their spouses — who are also gathering in Phoenix — plan to attend a Sept. 13-15 pre-meeting visit to the Arizona-Mexico border. The trip, organized by the Diocese of Arizona, aims to help bishops and spouses “spend time … on both sides of the border seeing conditions for themselves,” according to a statement released by Greta Huls, diocesan canon for communication.

  1. A Senior Priest says:

Why do people want to pretend they’re important? This is such a pompous announcement.

  2. Daniel says:

[blockquote]all within a context of prayer, Bible study and worship[/blockquote]
Would it not be more correct to say “all within a context of prayer, Bible study, worship and litigation?” 🙂

  3. Philip Snyder says:

“Evangelism?” What would the HoB (aside form a few members) know about Evangelism. To participate in Evangelism is to spread the good news and what the the Good News that TEC’s leaders have for the world? Many seem to think that it is this: “Jesus Christ died to make you feel good about yourself.”

When TEC’s leaders get serious about understanding and living the Gospel, then they can start to talk about Evangelism.

  4. AnglicanFirst says:

One of my first reactions to the General Convention’s approval of Gene Robinson for consecration as bishop was of the damage that ‘the new direction’ that ECUSA was taking would do to Episcopalian evangelistic outreach efforts to the immigrant populations in our midst.

  5. Stuart Smith says:

In our diocese, the “other” diocesan web-site used to describe the latest update on their legal pursuit of our property as “Holy Stewardship” (no kidding… they really did). They have changed the web-site title recently. I wonder what “Evangelism” in the gnostic TEC means?

  6. Pb says:

Evangelism is another word for dialogue. If they talk at you enough, you will finally give in and concede they are right. Then you can be lincluded and the church will grow.

  7. Paula Loughlin says:

Daniel, I do believe these days at 815 “worship and litigation” would be a redundancy.

  8. magnolia says:

i wrote to that bishop after seeing his ridiculous comments regarding TEC and the orthodox. i was confirmed in that diocese back in the early nineties. i kept wondering why that silly priest kept talking about the chicago riots…

  9. Teatime2 says:

Well, at least they’re going to the Border. Perhaps if bullets whiz by their mitred heads, they’ll realize that their support of illegal immigration and all of the crime that comes with it is wrong-headed. Or maybe they won’t. 🙁
