A Charlottesville Episcopal church is taking steps toward recognizing same-sex unions.
“It is another step along the road that this church has had in opening its doors to people. Particularly people on the margins,” said Rector James Richardson.
St. Paul’s Memorial Church sits right across University Avenue from the UVA Rotunda. And after months of deliberation, it’s decided to stand up to officially recognize same-sex relationships.
This article is not reporting; this article is advocacy. The comments appended provide all the balance.
On another note, I always find it interesting that the advocates of love and tolerance brand their opponents as hateful. That one-size-fits-all designation seems kind of, well, hateful to me.
I didn’t read the article. I watched the video. That was very one-sided and full of fluff. It also had sloppy video and copy.
You’re right, David — the comments to the article are a hoot.
[blockquote]In his decision to bless and recognize same sex unions, Richardson turned to his congregation, his clergy, and even the Bible itself. He says the decision reflects the fact that the definition of marriage is changing.[/blockquote]
I agree, he bases his decision and builds his church on shifting sands.
[blockquote]”The Bible has a rather large latitude on marriage,” Richardson said. “We think of it now as primarily for the mutual joy of husband and wife. That has led to an inevitable question – is it only men and women who can have the mutual joy of a committed, supportive, loving relationship?”[/blockquote]
Because he has come to conclude that the Bible cannot be trusted for guidance due to the “large latitude” that he reads into it, he presents us with his re-definition of the purpose of marriage, a definition that conveniently fits his desire for ssbs.
St Paul is quite a jewel with 1700 Members, ASA of 400, and Plate & Pledge of $700K in 2009. As a protege of +Lamb who odained him priest in 2001 and in 2008 was selected to head St Paul. In my service days we called such a “fast burner”. He will no doubt receive strong support from the politically correct at UVA. Statmann
