(Telegraph) Archbishop urges Christians to ”˜repent’ over ”˜wicked’ attitude to homosexuality

The Most Rev Justin Welby told an audience of traditional born-again Christians that they must “repent” over the way gay and lesbian people have been treated in the past and said most young people viewed Christians as no better than racists on the issue.

Archbishop Welby, who as a young priest once opposed allowing gay couples to adopt children, said the church now had to face up to what amounted to one of the most rapid changes in public attitudes ever.

While insisting that he did not regret voting against same-sex marriage in the House of Lords, he admitted that his own mind was not yet “clear” on the wider issues which he was continuing to think about.

Read it all. Also, there is an article in The Independent on this there.

Here is what his hosts on this occasion (most of whom are under 35) believe

Is there anything sadder than a fallen evangelical?

So glad I am free of the morass that is the Anglican Communion.

I am fast becoming convinced that Welby is really KJS disguised in the female version of drag.

Hmmm. I’m not at all so sure. The Telegraph interprests the import of Welby’s remarks the way it wants to do, but I think they’re fundamentally misconstrued the thrust of his remarks. Still, the very fact that it was possible, and even easy, for his speech to be taken (wrongly, I think) as a capitulation to the inevitability, if not correctness, of the triumph of the “progressive” side is sufficient to show the inadequacy of Welby’s attempt at being balanced and playing the role of peace-maker.

Look again, folks. ++Welby is calling the Church to engage in aggressive, intentional evangelism, knowing full well that a great many people in the Global North find the gospel message both incomprehensible and even immoral in its “exclusivism.” At least, that’s what I think he means (being charitable and giving him the benefit of the doubt). But, of course, I could be engaging in my own form of eisegesis, interpreting Welby’s remarks to mean what I hope they mean and want him to mean, just as that extremely liberal rag the Telegraph has done in the opposite direction.

    P.S. Archer (#2),

Would you please clarify when you departed TEC and where you’ve gone? I’m sorry, but I missed that. If you’re still in Brookings, there can’t be many options in eastern SD. Anyway, best wishes. You’ll be missed.

I swam the Tiber and am back in Nebraska. I just could not do it anymore.

  7. New Reformation Advocate says:

    OK, thanks, Archer.

So you swam both the Tiber and the Missouri Rivers? Well, again I wish you all the best. I’m glad that you still post occasional comments here on T19, as some other ex-TEC folks do. I’m sure Fr. Tim Fountain will be among those who miss you most.
