Are we the only ones to have gotten a notice from PEBA (Public Employees Benefit Adminstration) for state employees that we have to send them a copy of our marriage license or marriage certificate AND have a continuing marriage affidavit notarized? Is this why? Too many insurance companies are getting scammed so now they want to know that you are truly married to whomever you have listed as a spouse? This is just nuts! Go after these idiots but why should we have to *prove* that we are legally married in the state of South Carolina. Talk about being invasive- there is no reason they need this. It is just intrusive!

#1, I suppose PEBA doesn’t have access to tax returns, because years of filing joint returns, or even married filing separate returns, would be enough evidence. It is sad to contemplate how many people try to cheat the system to get benefits they’re not entitled to. I was happy to find we still have our marriage certificate when I needed to produce it before being granted a visa to enter India with my husband when he worked there.
