    Thank you for this. My grandfather was at the Somme and some of the other battles, and survived, although badly wounded by shrapnel which remained lodged too close to remove next to his spine for the remainder of his life. He returned to the front after being put back together again. I have copies of the two mentions in despatches he had, one for rescuing someone under fire and the second for capturing a group of Germans on his own and the decoration for his gallantry. I think he was about 19 at the time of the Somme. He was great fun and warmly remembered.
