    That was my guess, #2. The reality is somewhat worse. I should have known…when I spent a few months in Detroit about a decade ago, I was distressed to find how closely the city proper resembled some of the more depressed third-world areas I’ve been to. It’s only gotten worse since.

    I figured there was no supermarket in central Detroit — too many holdups to be profitable. It really is worse than third-world areas. There, I think you would find fewer liquor stores (none in Muslim countries) but plenty of fresh food sellers — no freezers. In central Cairo, fruit and vegetables are sold everywhere and liquor nowhere.
