That this was said publicly is a reflection of +Harrower’s character. But that this is his reaction is an indication of the impact of this course of action by TEC upon much of the communion at large.
+Harrower reflects the kind of ‘moderate’ Anglican evangelical who is quite common outside of TEC. He plays well with others. When the then Primate of Australia accused, in print, the Diocese of Sydney of articulating an Arian view, +Harrower was the person that the bishops of Australia asked to look into the issue and report back. I think that was partly because most of the bishops thought that his opinion would be roughly similar to theirs.
If his reaction is like this, one can be sure that there’s a lot more who think similarly, but who haven’t articulated it publicly. While it doesn’t particularly help SC, it might mean that what is happening to SC will help the communion as a whole. The true colors of TEC-style revisionism are increasingly on display for more and more to see and reject decisively. And that will make ++Williams’ attempt to just keep TEC in a place of influence (or ‘conversation’) harder. They might be there in the formal structure, but there’ll be little openness to them relationally.
