The Catholic Church is ramping up support for immigration reform with plans to mobilize up to two dozen dioceses in key states in hopes of convincing House Republicans to support a comprehensive bill, organizers said.
The church is planning a series of loosely coordinated events, including an immigration-focused Mass at some churches Sept. 8 ”” the day before Congress returns from a five-week summer recess ”” and pilgrimages of church members to regional offices of lawmakers.
I read the article and still don’t have an idea of what consitutes “reform”, aside from what is clearly amnesty. Not that I oppose amnesty, but “reform” can mean lots of things.
Anyway, I clicked over to the NYT article and it was interesting, although we never heard any of the usual objections: keep the Church out of politics, no moral authority due to sex scandals, and the like. The comments did make some of those points, but they generally came from a different crowd from when the subject is abortion.
