(BBC) In Scotland, Church concerned at evidence of rising funeral costs

The Church of Scotland’s report showed that in some areas charges have increased by almost 300% in five years.

The average increase was found to be 62% from five years ago, with a 36% rise in the past three years.

  1. Terry Tee says:

The report is surprisingly short on actual figures. Here in London, a funeral in church leading to cremation will typically cost around £2500. For a burial, double that at least.
The church fee (including the priest) is £160; in addition the organist usually charges £80 to £100. Church = only 5-10% of the cost. To be fair the undertakers do usually make the figures clear to families, although in grief not everything is taken in.
