Bishop of London–Clergy letter about civil partnerships in our churches

It is quite legitimate that this issue is being raised. However, the unity of the Church and our core mission particularly in these sobering and challenging economic times, must remain paramount. I hope the discussion will continue in a prayerful and respectful way, whilst not distracting from the important ministry our churches are carrying out in their communities.

Read it all.

This is a firm, but also courteous and godly letter.

Rowan Williams is not due to retire for almost ten years, but IF he went early for some reason then the CofE could do a lot worse than have +Chartres as the new ABC. But he is 64 now, so it would need to happen soon.

Mind you, the CofE had the right person available for ABC back in 2003 (Michael Nazir-Ali) and instead ended up with 2nd best – Rowan.

I disagree. One might as well posit that it is legitimate to raise the issue of sanctioning covetousness, adultery, or idolatry. Proposing a rejection of basic Christian teaching should not be considered legitimate for ostensibly Christian clergy or a Christian church.
