TEC Bishop of Oklahoma discusses General Convention Same-Sex Marriage Vote

[Bishop Ed] Konieczky said he voted against a related measure that calls for a change in the the denomination’s canonical definition of marriage as a “union of a man and a woman.”

He said the resolution, which was eventually approved, calls for altering the current canon language to “gender-neutral language,” replacing “a man and a woman” with “both parties.”

In his letter to the Oklahoma diocese on the Sunday after the denomination’s vote on gay marriage, Konieczky said he voted against this language alteration because it places the denomination’s canon in conflict with language used in their Book of Common Prayer and the denomination’s constitution….

Konieczky said he did not think the denomination had done the necessary theological work to make the switch to gender-neutral language.

If the elves would permit, I will post a link to the Dio of OK GenCon blog that has the full statement in which Bishop Konieczky states, [blockquote]”As you are aware, in 2012, I voted in favor of Resolution A049, which authorized the ‘Trial Use’ of a liturgy for the blessing of same gender unions. This resolution provided that the use of this liturgy be under the guidance and authority of the Diocesan Bishop, and that the ‘Trial Liturgy’ could be adapted as needed for use in local contexts. Yesterday, I remained consistent in my support of this liturgy and voted in favor of this first section of Resolution A054.”[/blockquote]
When he says that the necessary theological work has not been done, I am reminded of a nearly identical statement from Bishop Waldo of Upper South Carolina a few years ago. Bishop Waldo was not convinced at the time that the Church could bless same-sex couples, but after a few years he changes his mind and is now convinced to the point where same-sex “marriages” may take place in Upper SC.

Bishop Konieczky is playing games with the pewsitters here.

And here’s another one. This bishop has reported told diocesan clergy that sacramental marriage is between man and woman. One wonders when he will change his mind on that.

#1–Underground–I think/hope you really know Waldo ALWAYS was convinced same sex blessing and marriage were OK; he was playing a charade with the few orthodox of you still left in Upper SC. Its the old frog in hot water charade. His whole election was a wink and nod game which was orchestrated by Dorsey Henderson.
