Is generosity in Britain a thing of the past? A report from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), UK Giving Report 2026, published in March, suggests that both donation levels and the number of people giving are falling.
In 2025, the British public donated an estimated £14 billion, a 9.1-per-cent decrease from £15.4 billion in 2024 — the first decrease in giving since 2021, the report states. The decrease is driven by lower average donations in 2025 of £65, down from £72 in 2024. The report’s findings are based on responses from 12,913 over-16s.
Nevertheless, research specifically into the trends of legacy giving suggests a more positive outlook. The director of Remember A Charity, Lucinda Frostick, says that research shows “a really slow, steady, positive increase in the proportion of people choosing to leave a gift in their will”.
